Sarnia Primary School was officially established in 1959 as Sarnia Government School with only 59 learners, most of whom were children of railway workers living in the surrounding community. The school originally operated from a house in Stapleton Road, Pinetown, before relocating to its current site on what was formerly the old Albers Dairy Farm.
A reminder of the school’s rich heritage still stands proudly on the grounds today in the form of three palm trees that formed part of the original farmhouse property. Over the decades, the school has grown from humble beginnings into a well-established and respected educational institution serving the greater Pinetown community.
In its early years, Sarnia Primary functioned as a dual-medium school, accommodating both English and Afrikaans-speaking learners. As the surrounding community evolved, the school transitioned to an English-medium school in 1975.
The school expanded steadily during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1975, the swimming pool was officially opened, laying the foundation for the school’s proud tradition of excellence in swimming and lifesaving. Many learners went on to achieve provincial and national recognition in these fields. In 1983, the school hall was officially opened, further strengthening the school’s sporting, cultural, and community programmes.

Over the decades, the principals of Sarnia Primary School have played a significant role in shaping the school’s identity, traditions, standards, and sense of community. Through strong leadership, commitment, and dedication to education, successive principals have contributed to the growth and success of the school.
One of the notable early principals of Sarnia Primary School was Mr Les Stanley, who is remembered fondly by many former learners, staff members, and members of the community. Mr Stanley played an important role in establishing and strengthening the culture, discipline, and traditions of the school during its developmental years.
He was respected for his strong leadership, commitment to learner development, and dedication to maintaining high standards within the school. Under his leadership, the school continued to build its reputation as a caring and disciplined educational institution focused on academic, sporting, and personal growth.
Mr Stanley is remembered as one of the foundational leaders who helped shape the ethos and community spirit that continue to characterise Sarnia Primary School today.
Mr Peter O’Neill served as principal of Sarnia Primary School from 2003 until his retirement in 2023. His association with the school began much earlier when he joined Sarnia Primary in 1992 as a temporary educator before later becoming a permanent staff member and subsequently Head of Department.
After serving as principal of Kloof Senior Primary School, Mr O’Neill returned to Sarnia Primary in July 2003 as principal, beginning more than two decades of dedicated leadership.
During his tenure, the school continued to strengthen its academic standards, sporting achievements, cultural programmes, and learner support structures. Mr O’Neill was widely respected for his calm leadership style, professionalism, fairness, and genuine care for both learners and staff. He remained deeply committed to preserving the family-oriented atmosphere and strong sense of community for which Sarnia Primary became well known.
Under his leadership, the school continued to grow in both reputation and achievement while maintaining its core values and traditions.
In 2024, Mrs Janine Houston was appointed principal of Sarnia Primary School, continuing the school’s proud tradition of dedicated leadership and service.
Mrs Houston brought with her more than 35 years of educational experience as well as many years of service to Sarnia Primary School itself. Having initially joined the school through locum teaching before later becoming a permanent educator and subsequently Departmental Head, she developed a strong understanding of the school’s culture, values, and community.
As principal, Mrs Houston has focused on strengthening learner support systems, academic standards, inclusive education practices, staff development, and pastoral care while continuing to uphold the traditions and values that have shaped Sarnia Primary School over many decades.
Her leadership continues to reflect the school motto, “Unity is Strength,” promoting collaboration, accountability, compassion, and a strong commitment to the wellbeing and development of every learner entrusted to the care of the school.
As Sarnia Primary School continues its journey into the future, it remains proud of its rich history, strong traditions, and the dedicated principals, educators, learners, parents, and community members who have contributed to making the school a respected and valued institution within the Pinetown community.
